Best for

Club members who already know the rules and can say no to a friend who wants “just one more arrow” while others are collecting.

Ranges cannot open without this role. It is the clearest local hire.

You will annoy someone. That is the job. Do not take the role without the club’s backing and insurance.

Beginner have-a-go inductions

What it involves

A briefing, armguard, finger tab or release as appropriate, a low draw-weight bow, and a few supervised ends. Photos happen behind the line or not at all.

Best for

Instructors the club has signed off, with a ratio they can actually watch.

Main advantage

Open days and corporate have-a-gos are a known product. The briefing is the value.

Main drawback

Dry fires and high draws from excited beginners. Stop the session rather than “see how it goes.”

Bow setup and brace-height tuning

What it involves

Serving, nocking point, brace height, tiller, and a paper or bare-shaft check for club recurves and compounds you are qualified to touch.

Best for

Archers who already tune their own bow and will not touch a compound they have not been trained on.

Main advantage

Sits in the workshop when the line is full. Repeat work when a serving dies.

Main drawback

A badly set compound is dangerous. If you are not trained on it, send it to someone who is.

What it involves

  • Olympic-pathway retainers. Nobody sells a national-team place after a paid weekend. High-performance pathways are published by the governing body.
  • Illegal or grey-import bows. A “deal” compound with no serial, or a bow that is not legal to own where you live, is not stock for a tuning business.
  • Score betting and match “locks”. Wagering on archery matches is gambling, not range work.
  • Ghost range memberships. A club that only exists as a payment link, with no address or insurance, is not a place to send beginners.
